Conger eels colonise the wreck's engine room and cargo holds within months of sinking, establishing fixed dens from which they ambush crustaceans and fish after dark. Their growth is rapid on productive Atlantic wrecks where food availability is high, and resident individuals at Sagres regularly exceed a metre in length. They are a classic wreck dive encounter and one of the most predictable species on the site.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
