Large conger eels, sometimes exceeding 2 metres, inhabit the deepest recesses of the cave system. They are nocturnal hunters that emerge at dusk to prey on fish, octopus, and crustaceans across the cave floor and surrounding reef. Divers who linger at the cave entrance at the end of the dive commonly spot one or more congers beginning their evening movement while daylight is still fading.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
