Kakeromajima Hammerhead Point
Amami Islands · Japan
A deep channel off Kakeromajima's southern tip where scalloped hammerheads gather in schools from late autumn through winter, patrolling the thermocline above a sloping reef wall draped in sea fans. Oceanic manta rays ride the upwellings alongside silvertip sharks, giving this site a genuinely pelagic character despite its proximity to shore. The surrounding hard coral gardens are dense and largely undamaged, hosting a rich community of reef fish that draws predators throughout the year.
