Manta rays are present throughout the year at Kakeromajima, using cleaning stations on the shallow reef crest before spiralling down into the blue to feed on zooplankton-rich upwellings. They are most numerous from spring through autumn when plankton blooms peak in the Amami Straits. Individual animals have been photo-identified returning to the same stations across multiple years.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
