The crocodile population at Banco Chinchorro represents one of the healthiest and most accessible groups of American crocodiles in the Caribbean, thriving in the atoll's protected lagoon where fishing pressure is low and prey is abundant. These animals are apex predators of the lagoon ecosystem, controlling populations of fish, turtles, and birds, and their presence is a strong indicator of overall ecosystem health. Unlike most crocodile encounters worldwide, Chinchorro's animals are genuinely habituated — they do not associate divers with food or threat, allowing prolonged observation at close range.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
