A small population of American crocodiles inhabits the deeper channels of Caroni Swamp, making this one of very few dive sites where crocodilian encounters are genuinely possible. They are shy and primarily nocturnal, and sightings are rare but documented — typically resting on muddy banks or submerged at channel edges. Their presence is an indicator of exceptional ecosystem health in the swamp.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
