Common Cuttlefish

Cuttlefish patrol the interface between the sandy floor and the rocky reef at Aquarium Bay, using their remarkable chromatophore control to match both substrates as they hunt. They are present throughout the year but are most visible in spring when they move into the shallows to court and deposit eggs on the reef structure. Their intelligent, inquisitive behaviour and willingness to hover close to divers makes them a favourite of underwater photographers.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
