A resident pod uses the Diapontia island channels as a foraging corridor, and individuals sometimes approach divers on the reef — particularly juveniles engaging in exploratory behaviour. Underwater encounters are opportunistic and cannot be guaranteed, but surface sightings during surface intervals are a near-daily feature of dives here in summer. The Ionian population is genetically distinct from offshore Mediterranean dolphins and represents an important conservation priority.

Common Bottlenose Dolphin is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
