Common bottlenose dolphin

A resident pod of common bottlenose dolphins has used Brijuni's sheltered channels for decades and individuals have been photo-identified across multiple years. They are highly social, echolocating hunters that cooperate to herd fish against the reef face. Underwater encounters are unscripted — the dolphins approach divers on their own terms and occasionally remain for extended curiosity-driven interactions.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
