Common Starfish

Asterias rubens

Sighting evidence at Dalvík Wall, Eyjafjörður

Dense aggregations of common starfish patrol the rock faces and base of the wall, preying heavily on mussels and barnacles. In summer months, mass spawning events turn the water column milky white with gametes, creating a spectacular if disorienting dive experience. Their vibrant orange colouration contrasts sharply with the dark basalt columns.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
