Common Starfish

Asterias rubens

Sighting evidence at Jørpeland Wall, Trondheim Fjord

Common starfish are among the most abundant predators on the Jørpeland wall, preying on mussel beds and barnacle patches in the upper zone before descending to hunt sea urchins and bivalves at depth. Their vivid orange coloration creates strong contrast against the white anemone carpet and dark granite. Aggregations of hundreds can form in spring during spawning events, producing one of Norway's most striking mass-marine-life spectacles.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
