Oceanic whitetips follow dolphin pods seasonally through the Fury Shoals, drawn by the activity of a large pod and the abundance of open-water prey. Their rounded, white-tipped fins are unmistakable at distance, and their slow, rolling swimming style belies a sudden acceleration capability that makes them formidable predators in open water. Critically endangered, encounters at Fury Shoals represent some of the most reliable opportunities remaining to observe this species in its natural pelagic context.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
