European Sea Bass

Dicentrarchus labrax

Sighting evidence at Freus Channel, Ibiza and Formentera

Sea bass use the Freus Channel's current as a hunting advantage, positioning themselves in the eddy zones behind rocks to ambush smaller fish being swept past. Groups of a dozen or more are common in the stronger flow sections, an unusual sight for a species typically solitary outside spawning season. The channel's productivity supports some of the largest sea bass concentrations in the Balearics.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
