Gilt-head Bream

Sparus aurata

Sighting evidence at Freus Channel, Ibiza and Formentera

Bream shoals feed along the edges of the posidonia meadows that line the channel floor, picking invertebrates from the seagrass leaves with their powerful crushing teeth. Dense aggregations of hundreds of individuals hover over the meadow edge, particularly at slack water when feeding activity peaks. The channel's posidonia habitat is among the healthiest remaining in the western Mediterranean and directly supports this fish abundance.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
