Gilt-head Bream

Sparus aurata

Sighting evidence at Kleftiko, Milos

Schools of 20 to 50 gilt-head bream patrol the cave mouths and open sandy patches, picking invertebrates from the posidonia rhizomes. Their metallic flanks catch the cave-filtered light beautifully, and they are curious enough to approach slow-moving divers closely. Juveniles shelter in the densest posidonia during summer months.
