Specific Point
Inhambane · Mozambique
An exposed headland point where seasonal upwellings concentrate whale sharks in numbers unmatched anywhere else on Africa's east coast, with multiple simultaneous sightings between October and March being a routine occurrence rather than a lucky encounter. The site drops from a shallow sand shelf into open blue water where whale sharks cruise the thermocline feeding on dense aggregations of fish eggs and zooplankton. Divers snorkel or freedive alongside these filter feeders, making it accessible to non-certified divers as well as experienced scuba divers who drop to 15-20 metres to observe the sharks from below.
