Dentex

Dentex dentex

Sighting evidence at Baron Gautsch, Istria

Dentex are apex predatory fish of Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic rocky reefs, identified by their robust body, steep forehead, and canine teeth visible even when the mouth is closed. They patrol wreck sites in small groups, hunting bream, mullet, and cephalopods. Mediterranean populations have declined from overfishing, making encounters at protected Croatian wrecks increasingly notable.
