Dentex dentex

Sighting evidence at Punta del Faro, Portofino

Dentex are apex reef predators that have benefited enormously from Portofino's marine reserve protections, and the large individuals encountered at Punta del Faro represent some of the biggest in the Mediterranean. They patrol the ledges and deeper rocks in small groups, hunting bream, wrasse, and smaller fish with sudden accelerating charges. Their recovery within the reserve is considered one of the clearest indicators of how quickly Mediterranean ecosystems can rebound when fishing pressure is removed.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
