Painted combers are among the most striking and approachable reef fish in the Ionian, common in rocky habitats around Meganisi from the shallows to 30 metres. As simultaneous hermaphrodites, any individual can mate with any other, which gives the species a reproductive advantage in patchy habitats. Their tolerance of divers makes them reliable photographic subjects at every dive on this site.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
