Red gorgonian sea fans grow in spectacular colonies along the deeper sections of the Porto Katsiki wall, particularly below 25 metres where light is reduced and current flow is consistent. They are filter feeders that require steady water movement to capture plankton, and their presence indicates the clean, well-oxygenated Ionian water quality. Individual colonies can exceed 1 metre in diameter and may be over a century old, making them among the most venerable organisms on the wall.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
