Henningsvær sits within the Vestfjorden spawning grounds that have supported the Lofoten cod fishery for over a thousand years, and large aggregations of Atlantic cod move through the reefs from January to April during their annual migration from the Barents Sea. Schools of hundreds of fish hang in the water column above the kelp, visible from the surface on clear days, and individuals will approach divers with evident curiosity. The spawning aggregations make January to March the single best time to dive with large Atlantic cod anywhere in the world.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
