Greater amberjack circle Ilhéu de Ferro's pinnacle in schools of 10 to 40 individuals, their powerful fusiform bodies built for sustained pursuit predation in the open Atlantic water column where their primary prey of mackerel and scombrids attempt to outpace them through sheer speed. They are strongly associated with underwater structure throughout the Atlantic and Mediterranean, using seamounts, pinnacles, and wrecks as aggregation points and hunting stations — the pinnacle at Ferro concentrates fish biomass in the otherwise featureless deep water, making it the predictable anchor point for amberjack throughout the year. Juveniles associate closely with floating Sargassum and drifting debris before recruiting to reef-associated adult schools, and the Ilhéu de Ferro population includes individuals estimated at 15 to 20 kilograms.
