One of the largest bony fish in European waters, the conger eel can exceed 2 m and 60 kg. Congers are powerful nocturnal hunters of fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods and are highly site-faithful, returning to the same overhang or cave mouth across many years. At Cassidaigne, large individuals inhabit the deepest recesses of the seamount and are frequently encountered by divers hovering at the base of the structure.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
