Orange cup coral

Astroides calycularis

Sighting evidence at Grotte de la Triperie, Marseille Calanques

Unlike most Mediterranean corals, Astroides calycularis is an azooxanthellate species — it requires no sunlight and gains all nutrition by catching zooplankton with its neon-orange tentacles. It carpets the ceilings and walls of caves and overhangs, forming some of the most visually striking biological communities in the western Mediterranean. Its range is contracting northward as warming waters shift its thermal envelope, making sites like the Calanques increasingly important reference populations.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
