Common cuttlefish aggregate in Žanjice Bay between April and June to mate and lay egg clusters on posidonia rhizomes and rocky outcrops, making spring the most spectacular time to visit. Males display elaborate chromatophore ripples across their mantle to compete for females, producing hypnotic colour waves visible from several metres away. After spawning, adults die, leaving juveniles that spend the summer feeding intensively on shrimp and small fish in the shallows.

Cuttlefish is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
