Green sea turtles congregate at the power plant discharge in unusual densities, drawn by the warm outflow and the dense algae growth it stimulates on surrounding rocks. Hawaii's green turtle population nests primarily at French Frigate Shoals in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, and the individuals at Electric Beach are foraging juveniles and adults that have learned to exploit this anthropogenic thermal resource.

Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
