Posidonia Seagrass

Posidonia oceanica

Sighting evidence at Secca del Cristo, Portofino

The dense posidonia meadows at Secca del Cristo are among the healthiest in the northern Mediterranean, providing nursery habitat for dozens of juvenile reef fish species. This endemic Mediterranean seagrass produces oxygen, stabilises sediment, and supports the entire reef food web. Divers drift slowly above the swaying meadows to spot pipefish, seahorses, and cuttlefish sheltering within the leaf blades.
