Posidonia Seagrass

Posidonia oceanica

Sighting evidence at Freus Channel, Ibiza and Formentera

The Freus Channel hosts the globally significant Ibiza-Formentera Posidonia meadow, recognised by UNESCO as one of the largest and most pristine examples of this ancient Mediterranean habitat. These meadows are estimated to be up to 100,000 years old in places — some of the oldest living organisms on Earth. Drifting over them during a Freus drift dive provides an unparalleled perspective on a habitat that once covered most of the Mediterranean's shallow seafloor.

Posidonia Seagrass is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
