Posidonia seagrass

Posidonia oceanica

Sighting evidence at Capo Testa, Capo Carbonara

The Posidonia oceanica meadows around Capo Testa are in exceptionally good health — a reflection of the low boat traffic, clean water, and geological substrate that the granite peninsula provides. The meadow acts as a nursery for juvenile grouper, sea bream, and cephalopods, and its dense leaf blades slow water movement, trapping sediment and keeping the water column clear. Dead leaf mats (matte) at the seagrass margin form hard substrate where nudibranchs and encrusting bryozoans flourish.

Posidonia seagrass is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
