Noble pen shell

Pinna nobilis

Sighting evidence at Capo Caccia Wall, Capo Carbonara

Noble pen shells are filter feeders that draw large volumes of water through their gills to extract phytoplankton and suspended particles, contributing meaningfully to local water clarity. They host a commensal shrimp (Pontonia pinnophylax) and small crab (Pinnotheres pisum) living inside the mantle cavity in a non-parasitic relationship. The species is now the subject of urgent conservation breeding and genetic preservation programmes across Spain, Italy, and Croatia.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
