The cave entrance at Grotta delle Rondinelle hosts some of the densest gorgonian aggregations in the Adriatic, with fan corals covering the walls from 10 metres to the base of the wall at 35 metres. These long-lived colonial animals filter plankton from the Adriatic current and provide critical habitat for brittle stars, cleaner shrimps, and juvenile fish that shelter among the branches.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
