The Heraklion shelf supports some of the densest Eunicella cavolini concentrations in the eastern Mediterranean, with terrace edges at 22 to 30 m carrying colonies spaced just 30 to 50 cm apart across sections exceeding 200 m in length. Each fan orients into the prevailing northerly current, creating a uniform directional plantation effect that is visually striking and ecologically functional — the fans collectively filter a substantial volume of water per tidal cycle, contributing meaningfully to local water clarity. The nutrient upwelling that drives their density also explains the site's exceptional visibility, as clear oligotrophic water is paradoxically produced by the same cold intrusion that feeds the fans.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
