Dead Man's Fingers

Alcyonium digitatum

Sighting evidence at Jørpeland Wall, Trondheim Fjord

Dead man's fingers are soft corals that form thick, lobed colonies on the Jørpeland wall from the surface down to maximum depth. They are filter feeders dependent on the strong tidal current that sweeps nutrients along the fjord wall. In cold water their polyps extend fully, creating a woolly texture visible even from several metres away and providing shelter for nudibranchs, brittlestars, and small crustaceans.

Dead Man's Fingers is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record.
