Common Seal

Common seals haul out on Munkholmen's rocks and frequently interact with divers underwater, circling curiously before darting away. They feed primarily on sand eels, herring, and small flatfish in the sandy shallows around the island. Pup season in June and July brings mothers with nursing pups to the rocks, and divers are asked to maintain a respectful distance to avoid stress.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
