Once among the most abundant large shark species in the open ocean, oceanic whitetips are now critically endangered. The deep water beyond the Providenciales wall is one of the few Caribbean locations where encounters remain possible. They are bold and slow-moving: divers should maintain awareness but sightings are brief and the animals rarely linger near the wall face.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
