Xygia Reef

Zakynthos · Greece

Xygia on Zakynthos's northeast coast is famous for natural underwater sulphur springs that bubble up through the sandy seabed, creating a surreal milky haze and a faint scent of sulphur in the water. The reef itself hosts a healthy assemblage of scorpionfish camouflaged on encrusted boulders, schools of saddled bream, and posidonia meadows trailing off into the blue — a striking contrast to the otherworldly geological activity below. The open Ionian conditions here tend to bring stronger visibility than the sheltered south coast sites, rewarding divers with sweeping views of the limestone cliff wall above water as they surface.
