The sea caves and undercuts at 18 to 25 metres at Isleta del Moro host several large conger eels that have been resident long enough to accumulate substantial local mythology among regular divers. The largest known individual is estimated at well over 1.5 metres and positions itself at the forward edge of its cave with head extended — a posture that reflects established territory rather than defensive aggression. Night dives here reveal these animals fully free-swimming across the reef, and witnessing an adult conger in open water is a scale-altering experience rarely available to Mediterranean divers.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
