Greater amberjack are year-round residents of La Polacra's deeper flanks but grow noticeably more abundant between April and November when prey concentrations peak around the upwelling zone. They patrol in loose groups of three to eight individuals along the wall between 20 and 35 metres, moving at a purposeful pace that covers the entire extent of the pinnacle in a single circuit and challenges divers to keep pace with them on a single breath. Their curiosity about divers — displayed by a sudden banking turn that brings them within two metres before they wheel away — appears to be genuine investigative behaviour rather than alarm.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
