Seahorses occupy the posidonia meadow edges at 4 to 10 metres, anchoring to seagrass blades with their prehensile tails and waiting for small crustaceans to drift within range. Corfu's Ionian waters support a genetically distinct population, and males can be found carrying bulging brood pouches from April through August. They are extremely site-faithful and the same individuals can be found on repeated visits to the same seagrass patches.
