Greater amberjack patrol the outer crater wall in groups of 3 to 15 individuals, using the wall as a reference structure while they hunt. They are attracted by baitfish schools that aggregate in the crater bowl from July through September, and dives during these months often involve close-range passes from entire hunting packs circling at 10 to 20 m. Amberjack are fast-moving and not deterred by diver presence, making El Golfo one of the most dynamic pelagic encounters in the Canary Islands.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
