Protected red coral grows on the shadowed overhangs and cave ceilings of the Porto Katsiki cliff face, forming slow-growing colonies that take decades to reach visible size. This species has been heavily exploited historically for jewellery, making intact colonies like those here ecologically significant. Red coral provides structural habitat for a range of small invertebrates and fish that shelter within its branching skeleton.

Red Coral is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
