Common cuttlefish are abundant from early spring through autumn, drawn into the shallows by the rich prey base of shrimp, small fish, and crabs that inhabit the seagrass zone. Their ability to change colour and texture instantaneously makes them one of the most spectacular macro subjects in the Mediterranean. Mating aggregations occur in spring, with pairs performing elaborate colour displays before females deposit eggs on seagrass strands.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
