Caja de Muertos
Puerto Rico · United States
Caja de Muertos (Coffin Island) is an uninhabited nature reserve off Ponce on Puerto Rico's southern coast, surrounded by one of the island's healthiest remaining coral ecosystems with elkhorn and staghorn corals recolonising the shallows in encouraging numbers. The reef systems encircling the island shelter hawksbill and green turtles year-round, along with eagle rays that cruise the sandy channels between coral heads. Calm, sheltered conditions on the island's leeward side make this an excellent introduction to Puerto Rican reef diving, while the windward drop-offs offer more advanced wall dives.
