Pirate Wreck
Sainte-Marie Island · Madagascar
The bay of Sainte-Marie served as a major pirate base in the late 17th and early 18th centuries; several vessels lie in the shallows of what is now the world's only pirate cemetery bay. The wreck frames — wood long gone, encrusted cannon and iron fittings remaining — scatter across sandy bottom between 5 and 12 metres, festooned with soft coral and surrounded by curious reef fish that have made the ironwork their home. This is a historically unique dive with the relaxed depth profile that allows long bottom time.
