Funafuti Atoll
Tuvalu · Pacific
Funafuti Atoll sits in the remote central Pacific, a ring of coral motus enclosing a vast lagoon where the ocean drops away in sheer walls covered in hard and soft corals. Grey reef sharks patrol the passes, Napoleon wrasse cruise the coral heads, and WWII aircraft and vessel wrecks rest on the lagoon floor. Tuvalu receives fewer than a thousand visitors per year, so the reefs here are among the least pressured in the Pacific.
