Moheli Marine Park
Comoros · Indian Ocean
Moheli Marine Park is one of the Indian Ocean's most pristine and least visited marine protected areas, covering over 400 square kilometres of coral reef, seagrass, and open water around Moheli (Mwali), the smallest of the three main Comoros islands. The reef systems here are among the healthiest in the western Indian Ocean, largely undisturbed by mass tourism or commercial fishing. Humpback whales arrive from July to October to mate and give birth in the warm, sheltered waters. Green turtles nest on the island's beaches in large numbers, and the marine park's community-led conservation program has become a model for African ocean protection. Dugongs, multiple dolphin species, reef sharks, manta rays, and a spectacular variety of reef fish round out the experience. Visibility is exceptional, currents are manageable on most sites, and the soft coral gardens and hard coral bommies are in remarkable condition.
