Saba Bank
Netherlands (Caribbean) · Caribbean
Saba Bank is the largest submerged atoll in the Atlantic Ocean, a vast underwater plateau rising from 1800 metres to within 15 metres of the surface roughly 8 kilometres southwest of Saba island. Designated a Special Nature Reserve by the Netherlands, the Bank receives almost no recreational diving pressure, leaving its reefs in an exceptional state of health. Dense coral gardens sprawl across the shoals, nurse sharks rest in sandy channels, Nassau and tiger grouper aggregate in numbers rarely seen elsewhere in the Caribbean, and enormous schools of snappers patrol the reef edges. The remote location demands liveaboard or dedicated charter access, which keeps visitor counts low and marine life bold.
