Atlantic angel shark

Squatina squatina

Sighting evidence at Los Lobos — El Muelle Reef

Angel sharks enter Los Lobos' sandy corridors from October through April, following the same seasonal pattern observed across the Canary Islands. At El Muelle they are often found within 20 m of the jetty steps in as little as 8 m of water — unusually shallow for this species. The marine reserve status of Los Lobos means these individuals experience virtually no boat anchor disturbance, likely contributing to their tolerance of close approach by cautious divers.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
