Atlantic angel shark

Squatina squatina

Sighting evidence at Puerto del Carmen Bream Reef

The Atlantic angel shark is critically endangered and the Canary Islands hold the last viable European population. It is an ambush predator that buries itself in sandy substrate with only eyes and spiracles exposed, launching a rapid strike when prey passes within range. Divers approaching slowly along the sand from ahead — never from above — can observe individuals resting within arm's reach without triggering flight.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
