Sighting evidence at Papagayo Bay Angel Shark

Papagayo Bay is the highest-density angel shark location in the Canary Islands outside of El Hierro's Mar de las Calmas. Population research by the Canary Islands Shark Research project has identified over 70 individual animals in the bay using photographic ID of their unique dorsal spot patterns. The peak season runs October to April when cooler water temperatures drive the sharks from deeper offshore habitat into the sandy bays to rest and feed.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
